Squirrels live all over the place and can cause quite the trouble for homeowners- just ask any of those who have dealt with this issue. Squirrels living inside your home or on top of it will often chew through woodwork, mess up furniture, get into outdoor equipment like lawnmowers & snow blowers, tamper with cables that are connected to electrical wires (which could be dangerous), and even climb down chimneys.

As you might imagine these critters don't make great new friends when they're slithering their way around your attic space or chewing through some wiring... so if one shows its furry face near yours we recommend taking steps immediately before it becomes too late.

What to do if You Suspect Squirrels are in Your Home

Capsaicin for Outdoor Use

If you're dealing with squirrels outside, you can prevent chewing by spreading/spraying capsaicin on plants. Not only will it keep the pesky critters away from your yards and gardens, but they'll also be more alert to predators!

Use a Cage to Trap Them

When dealing with a pesky squirrel that is hindering your outdoor activities, it may be necessary to trap and relocate the animal. A 5" x 5" x 14" cage trap should do the trick for capturing these creatures of habit. These cages are typically set in areas where you have spotted activity from the animals - Nuisance Wildlife Marshals recommend that you have these cages bolted to trees or fences so they cannot escape once caught!

Peanut Butter Bait

Keep your bait fresh with these tips! Bait traps with peanut butter and whole peanuts in the shell. Set them up to be shaded, so squirrels don't overheat from being too close to heat sources like woodpiles or your house's roofline.

Inspect Your Entire Home Sometimes, people don't know that they have squirrels in their attic until they notice droppings. Inspecting the whole house should be done to find out how these pesky creatures are getting inside and then take action accordingly. Don't Put Traps in the Attic

You should not set traps inside your house because they will be ineffective. Traps need to either be placed outside near a hole or mounted directly on the entry/exit holes for them to work properly. The best way is probably just setting one-way exclusion doors, which allow squirrels out but don't let them back in again! Seal Up Entry-Ways Once the squirrels are gone, make sure that you seal up any holes where they can get back in by putting steel or a hard metal that can withstand critter claws and teeth at all entrances. We highly recommend using steel because it is unchewable and should prevent a future infestation from happening again.

Squirrels are a nuisance to homeowners because they can cause significant damage. In the past, squirrels were limited to areas with an abundance of trees and other natural resources for food. Nowadays, more people are seeing squirrels in their homes due to deforestation and increased development.
